How to pause before replying when you're irritated
Put the phone down or step back, take one slow breath with a longer exhale than inhale, and give yourself 90 seconds before you respond. The goal isn't to stop feeling irritated, just to choose your reply instead of firing it off.
Step by step
- Notice the urge to reply right now, and name it to yourself: irritated.
- Put the phone or keyboard down, or take one step back.
- Breathe in normally, then breathe out for longer than you breathed in.
- Repeat for about a minute and a half.
- Then decide: reply now, reply later, or don't reply.

Why 90 seconds?
It's short enough to actually do in the moment and long enough to put a gap between the trigger and your response.
Does this work for email and Slack too?
Yes. It's the same pause before you hit send on any message.
